Conference Ministry Team

Conference Minister
Kevin Goertzen
Kevin carries broad responsibilities as the lead staff person for VMC, leading the Conference Ministry Team, and providing staff support to Conference Council, Faith and Life Commission, District Ministers, and all other VMC ministry activities.

Kevin Goertzen began October 2025 as the conference minister for Virginia Mennonite Conference, having previously pastored churches in Turpin, OK, Goessel, KS, and Waynesboro, VA. He has also been involved in the work of the wider church throughout his career, having served as moderator of Western District Conference, a member of the MC USA Executive Board, and working for 6 years as a church relations associate for Mennonite Mission Network.

Kevin is married to Denise, and together they have two adult children (both married) and three grandchildren, two here in Harrisonburg and one in Colorado. In addition to the joy he finds in his family relationships, Kevin also enjoys backpacking and any other time out in the woods.

Although there are many things Kevin enjoys about his current position, spending time with pastors and church leaders has been the most fulfilling aspect of being a conference minister.

Minister of Equipping
Juan Carlos Malvaez
Carlos serves alongside Kevin on the Conference Ministry Team, providing training and support for congregational vitality; supporting churches undertaking new ministries and church planting; and equipping pastors, lay leaders, and congregations, in collaboration with VMC Districts and the Congregational Life Commission.

With more than 23 years of pastoral ministry experience, Juan Carlos leads a multicultural, multilingual congregation in Harrisonburg, Virginia. His broader service to the church includes years as a board member at VMM and participation on the transitional conference ministry team at VMC. He earned his Master of Divinity from EMS. And is currently enrolled in the AMBS DMin program. Juan Carlos and his wife, Wendy, have been married for 24 years and are the parents of three teenage children: Yohann, Elyann, and Victoria.
